Is It A Diamond Certificate, Or Is It A Diamond Grading Report?

Author: Kathy Abdelhak

Your shopping for a diamond engagement ring and one jewelry store shows you a diamond with a diamond certificate, and the next jewelry store shows you a diamond with a diamond grading report. You may have been shown a diamond grading report in both cases, diamond grading reports are often referred to as diamond certificates. You may have also been shown in one case a diamond certificate and in the other case a diamond grading report. You should know the difference before you buy your diamond.

Diamond Certificate:
A diamond certificate is a document produced by gemological laboratories to identify a stone. The certificate usually has the type of stone, the stones dimension, weight, and some times the color when it is need. It also will include any treatments the stone has had and sometimes the origin of the stone.

Diamond Grading Report:
A diamond grading report is a document from a laboratory to rate the diamonds color, clarity, cut, and carat weight or what is referred to as the (4cs). These reports are often referred to as diamond certificates, the correct term is ( Diamond Grading Report.)

You may have been shown a Diamond Grading Report, but the store is referring to this report as a diamond certificate. You should know the difference between the two of course the diamond grading report is a better document to go with when you are buying a diamond. This report has all the elements that you would need to determine the stones worth that you are planning on buying. Many stores will create their own diamond certificate in some cases this would be alright if you are dealing with a store that has a GIA certified diamond grader who would be grading the diamond and doing a certificate for your stone. If you are shown a document on a diamond that has the (4cs) included in the document, but is being referred to as a (diamond certificate) this is a diamond grading report.

When you are ready to buy your diamond make sure you see any and all documentation on the stone you are buying if the stone does not have a diamond grade report have the stone sent out to one of the many laboratories that do a diamond report. There are several very good laboratories and your jewelry should be able to take care of this for you.
