In addition to providing people with huge amounts of information, the worldwide web has effectively connected the world in a number of ways. One of the most popular ways this has been done is through e-mail. Through e-mail, messages are transmitted to any part of the world at a click of the mouse. However, e-mail has its limitations, as can be seen in its applications. One limitation is that transferring information through e-mail has a tendency to make computers vulnerable, as some messages transfer systems as viruses that can attach to messages. When computers are connected through a network, such as computers within a company, it is more reliable to transfer data through the network rather than through e-mail. Another limitation is that the amount of information that can be transferred is limited by the capacity of the server that is being used. Some servers only allow up to ten megabytes of data, while some can allow up to twenty-five megabytes of data. There are, however, situations in which a bigger amount of data, which reaches up to one gigabyte or more and cannot be separated into smaller parts, needs to be transferred. In response to these limitations, software has been developed to enable computers within a network to transfer data among each other. This transfer is facilitated through the file transfer window, which is found on newer version of Windows. This window can be used to upload files from your local computer to a remote host computer. In a company setting, the local computer is your own desktop computer, while the remote host can be another computer or the main database of the network. Using this window, it is also possible to upload and send multiple files at the same time by using the shift key and highlighting the files you want to be transferred. Although the window operates in a similar manner to Windows Explorer, there are some slight differences; for instance it is not possible to delete folders in the window if they are not empty. The file transfer window has paved the way to more reliable transfer of information within a network. This has proven to be an effective tool in increasing the efficiency of companies that put a high premium on the value of having the right information at the right time. |
