Exercise and Stay Healthy

Author: Pamela Nathan

It is possible to reach and maintain your ideal body weight. You may be genetically susceptible to obesity but generally most people simply eat excess calories and limit their physical activity. The key to overcoming the battle with excess pounds is to lead an active lifestyle and establish a healthy way of eating. You want to use up more calories than you consume.

Regular physical activity burns up excess calories and will in time burn up excess fat as well. In fact, studies indicate that those who continue their physical activity after going off their diets are more likely to keep their weight off. Every activity you engage in burns a certain amount of calories and we will list them according to very low, low, medium and high intensity. This will give you a guide to the amount you will be burning up when you engage in specific activities.

Physiologically, exercise is known to strengthen the heart, lower cholesterol and the risk of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and some cancers, prevent bone loss and also to increase metabolism. It also boosts your energy and morale and makes you feel invigorated. Once you start doing regular physical activity you will be amazed at how much it influences how you feel.

The best time to exercise is whenever you are willing. Look at your daily schedule realistically. Choose the best time of the day for yourself. If you are a morning person, that's when it should be, if not, choose another time of the day that is convenient. Start off slowly, possibly selecting smaller blocks of time so that you don't become overwhelmed. Every little bit of physical activity counts. Consider whether you want this time to be 'alone' time when you have the chance to be introspective and quiet or whether you prefer to be with someone, a friend or spouse or even a personal trainer who would help motivate and encourage you and assist you in making the commitment.

Physical activity ought to include walking, stretching, yoga, and aerobics. All of these activities contribute to allowing your body to benefit from different effects that they all have on your physical body. We recommend frequent ongoing physical activity. Try and be consistent by making a time each day that you set as physical activity time if you can. Consider including activity that is rhythmic, and repetitive. You must do something every day. Experts suggest at least 40 minutes 5 times a week if you want to lose weight. Set a reasonable goal and start off cautiously, don't overdo it. Give yourself a chance to experience how energetic you feel after you indulge in exercise.
